Mississippi Democratic Party Condemns Trump's Remarks on Iran Attacks, Calls on Mississippi Republicans to Respond

JACKSON, Miss. The Mississippi Democratic Party today condemned President Donald Trump's remarks at a Monday night rally in Nebraska, where he said of Iran, "Let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego," and described the cost of the war as "a very small price to pay."

The remarks came less than a month after Americans marked the 25th anniversary of September 11, a day the nation set aside to honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost and the first responders who ran toward danger. Twenty-five years later, the President of the United States spoke of American cities as acceptable losses.

Leaders from both parties have recognized how serious this is. California officials called the comments dangerous, and Jim Desmond, a Republican congressional candidate in California, publicly broke with the President.

Mississippi's Republican delegation has yet to follow his lead. As of this release, U.S. Senators Roger Wicker and Cindy Hyde-Smith and U.S. Representatives Trent Kelly, Michael Guest and Mike Ezell have offered no public response. Senator Wicker chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, and no member of the delegation is better placed to speak for the security of American communities. Senator Hyde-Smith has long held a 100 percent Trump support record, and Mississippians deserve to know whether that record includes this.

"A president defends American cities. He does not shrug at their destruction," said Mississippi Democratic Party Chairman Cheikh Taylor. "Mississippians expect their members of Congress to speak up for the safety of every American, from Los Angeles to San Diego to Jackson. Silence is compliance, and we are calling on all five of them to respond today."

"The silence from Mississippi's Republican delegation speaks loudly," said Mississippi Democratic Party Executive Director Mikel Bolden. "Families here have loved ones serving, and they expect their representatives to defend American communities and say so plainly. Mississippians are watching, and they will remember who spoke up and who stayed quiet when November arrives."

The Mississippi Democratic Party calls on Senators Wicker and Hyde-Smith and Representatives Kelly, Guest and Ezell to state publicly whether they stand with the President's remarks or with the American people they swore to protect.

On November 3, Mississippians can elect leaders who will defend every American community and say so out loud. Vote for Mississippi Democratic Party congressional candidates.
