Is MSBML Calling to Threaten Arrest?

No. It's a scam.

The Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure has received reports of scam phone calls to licensees that look like they're coming from the Board. The caller ID shows the Board's main number, (601) 987-3079, but the Board isn't making these calls. Scammers can fake, or "spoof," the number that shows up on your phone.

In one reported call, the caller told a licensee their license wasn't active and threatened them with arrest. The caller knew the licensee's NPI number, license number, permanent address and current address.

The Board will never call you to tell you your license isn't active, and the Board will never threaten you with arrest. A caller who knows your NPI number, license number or address isn't proof the call is real. That information can be found online. Other signs of a scam: the caller pushes you to act right away to keep your license or tells you not to tell anyone about the call.

If you get one of these calls, hang up. Don't give the caller any information or money. Then check your license status yourself by logging in to MELS (gateway.msbml.ms.gov) or call the Board directly at (601) 987-3079. The scammers can only fake the number on your screen. When you dial it yourself, you reach the real Board.
