Former Commissioner of the Mississippi Department of Corrections Demanded to Pay Back Funds
JACKSON, Miss. – Today, State Auditor Shad White announced that former Commissioner of the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC), Pelicia Hall, has received a civil demand after causing a principal loss of $142,532.73.
Section 96 of the Mississippi Constitution prohibits the payment of extra compensation in excess of the approved salary or hourly rate for a particular employee in the absence of an official policy.
Between August 2017 and February 2020, Hall initiated and received six “comp” time buyouts totaling $115,116.00, none of which she was eligible to receive. Hall was compensated for 1,810 hours despite being ineligible to receive a cash payout for that time.
“It’s vitally important that government officials know where they can and cannot spend taxpayer dollars,” said State Auditor Shad White. “I’m grateful for our investigators’ abilities and patience to get these tax dollars back where they belong.”
Suspected fraud can be reported to the Auditor’s office at any time by clicking the red button at www.osa.ms.gov or calling 1-(800)-321-1275 during normal business hours.
